Over the next 12-months, Seafood Cornwall will be running a series of pilot projects. that will focus on the following themes:
The current average age of a UK fisherman is 58, new entrants to the industry are at an all-time low and young new entrants are even lower. Young people are not seeing fishing as a viable career, and there is little support for those that do. It’s time to change that.
For the first time in Cornish fishing, we are putting young people at the heart of decision making. Together with the CFPO, we have developed a Youth Board which is made up of young fishermen (16-25) in the fishing industry, college students who are interested in getting into the sector and a host of maritime and experts.
The board will help us ensure our recruitment work remains relevant and accessible to all young people and provide opportunities for young people to direct communications to their own age group.
